DAVID HERINGTON IS A TOUR MANAGER
THE DUNE RATS HAVE RECENTLY KICKED OFF A TOUR STARTING IN CANADA WITH SUPPORT FROM THE WOLLONGONG LEGENDS HOCKEY DAD. THERE ARE 24 STOPS ON THIS TOUR AND IF YOU’VE FOLLOWED THE DUNE RATS FOR A WHILE YOU WOULD KNOW THEY ARE SKITZ SO BEING THE TOUR MANAGER WOULD BE A MISSION AND A HALF.
HERES A FEW QUESTIONS I PUT FORWARD TO DAVID TO GET THE GIST OF WHATS UP ON TOUR.
DAVID YOU ARE A TOUR MANAGER, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU TAKE CARE OF TO ENSURE A SUCCESSFUL TOUR?
Pre planning of everything. Having a good idea of what everyone wants; bands and venues as well as management. Good communication on all levels is key. Not only to TM’ing but to life! Doing things like making sure you’ve got transport, accommodation, backline and an organised venue are also a pretty big role.
IM SURE IT IS STRESSFUL BUT WHAT MAKES YOU DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
I love being able to travel the country and the world with my friends. Plus I don’t really know how to do anything else…
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE BEING A TOUR MANAGER?
I’ve done a few things, but most recently working as an assistant at a high school in the creative and performing arts faculty.
ADVICE FOR BANDS WHO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO TOUR ABROAD?
Be prepared to lose a lot of money but have a lot of fun.
ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DO WHAT YOU DO(tour manage)?
Be really organised. Write everything down. Make good spreadsheets. Don’t think you’re a rock star and leave that to the band. You’ve got to keep everything on track and hold it all together so keep a clear head.
YOU GET TO TRAVEL A LOT, WHAT IS LIFE ON THE ROAD LIKE WITH THE DUNIES?
It’s really fun – as I’m sure you can imagine. Obviously very tiring as well, but I’m constantly laughing and having a great time so the lack of sleep is probably worth it.
HOW HAVE THE CANADIANS RESPONDED TO THE AUSSIE LEGENDS DUNE RATS AND HOCKEY DAD?
The Canadians seemed to be in to it! It’s hard to tell though! I think there’s more Australians in Canada than there is Canadians…
FAVOURITE PLACE FROM THE TOUR SO FAR?
I’m in the Czech Republic at the moment, I really love it here. From Canada – I’d say I liked Canmore the most. I got a bit of time off there with the boy’s manager Matty. We went driving around in the mountains and it was incredibly beautiful!
ANY CHEEKY STORIES FROM TOURING?
Last night someone drank BC’s vomit out of a bucket on stage and I think it was the worst moment in my life so far.
HOW IMPORTANT IS PACKING FOR A TOUR ? ANY ESSENTIALS ?
I don’t really take a lot on tour for my personal stuff. I take a weeks worth of socks and underwear, a toothbrush and toothpaste and some shirts, my wallet and passport and that’s about it. I take my laptop, phone and relevant chargers. In terms of TMing equipment, all sorts. Paper, pens, sharpies, a portable printer, spare AAA lanyards, first aid stuff, painkillers, spare toothbrushes and tooth paste, hydralyte, portable battery for charging phones, multiple iPhone cables, 3.5mm audio cables for the van, spare batteries, a physical copy of a tour book, a folder, envelopes, cash bags for merch money, gaffa tape. Heaps of stuff! Maybe a nail care kit…
WHAT DO YOU MISS WHEN YOU ARE AWAY FOR SO LONG?
My family and girlfriend. I also miss making my own food.
